The right format for images and videos
Images and videos make up most of a website's load weight – the right choice determines loading time, user experience and Google ranking.
Image formats
WebP is today's standard format: significantly smaller than JPEG or PNG at the same quality. WebP or JPEG suit photos; for logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges use SVG – infinitely scalable and tiny. Contao generates WebP variants automatically.
Optimising images
Always embed images at the size actually needed and compress them – a 4000-pixel-wide photo in a 400-pixel column slows every page down. Every image also needs a meaningful alt text: for screen readers and Google image search.
Embedding videos
Short background or explainer videos add life to a page. Important: embed them compressed and without audio autoplay; load large videos via YouTube or Vimeo so they don't hurt loading time.
Mind the licences
Not every image from the web may be used. Use royalty-free databases (see below) or your own shots – this avoids costly warnings.
